Getting More Sleep: A Model’s Secret Weapon

As you’re already likely aware, taking care of your body and mind is vital for a male model. You’re not an office worker who had a late night and can now hide behind a computer monitor, you’re a professional model whose job it is to always look your best. But whilst skin care, a healthy diet, and a good workout regime are all equally important, it’s actually sleep that could give you increased stamina and confidence during your working hours.

Why?

First off, why is it so important to get more sleep? Your overall health for starters. Insufficient sleep over long periods of time has been linked to heart problems, diabetes, and obesity. But more than your health, more sleep will unquestionably improve your sex life, mood, attention, memory, and immune system.

The next two reasons are likely to be the ones that are important to male models: skin and weight. Not only can more sleep stave off signs of aging, but it can also repair skin quicker if it has been damaged by UV rays. Plus, you don’t want to turn up to a job with heavy bags under your eyes do you? As for weight, poor sleep is often associated with simply being lazy, as you’re more likely to avoid exercise and consume quick, unhealthy foods when you just don’t have the energy. As well, a hormone called leptin (which controls hunger) drops dramatically when you are lacking sleep, meaning you could well be reaching for high-fat and high-calorie foods more often.

How?

Understandably, a male model’s schedule is usually not consistent, as you could be up at 6am for a shoot one day, then perhaps have to attend an all-night fashion show the next. Getting the recommended 6-8 hours of sleep every night is easier said than done, but it is possible to get better sleep if you can’t get more. Being completely comfortable is a major reason as to how you can improve your sleep, and what you lie on will play a big part of that. Lastly, even if you’re not working that day, try to get in a bit of exercise, even if it’s just a brisk walk or light yoga stretches – it will pay off when you go to sleep. Additionally, if you’re going to take a mid-afternoon nap, make sure it’s only 10-30 minutes, otherwise you’re likely to sleep poorly at night.
